CHARMING TO MEET.
WOMEN OF INDIA. VISITOR'S IMPRESSIONS. "The women of India are rapidly becoming aware of modern interests and are desiring wider activities," eaid Mre. George Howard, wife of the American trade commissioner at Sydney, who passed through Auckland by the Monterey this morning. Before leaving America for Sydney Mrs. Howard spent seven years in India with her husband, and during that time she was able to see a great deal of the country and people. "The educated women of India are charming to meet," Mrs. Howard eaid, "and they are very interested in learning all they can. Of course a large majority still cling to the idea that a woman's place is in the home, and consequently their temperament is very different from the modern . English or American woman." Mre. Howard has had an interesting life. As well ae her seven years in Calcutta she has spent three years in the Philippines and four years in China. "This is my first visit to this part of the world,' , she eaid, "and I am looking forward to seeing Sydney and Australia. My husband and I also hope to be able to take a month's holiday during our Australian stay and visit Xew Zealand. From what I have heard overseas your country is very beautiful and when we were moved to Australia I was thrilled with the prospect of seeing both countries." Mrs. Howard is on her way to join her husband, who has already spent several months in Sydney.
