50TH ANNIVERSARY.
SISTERS OF THE POOR.
CELEBRATIONS TO-MORROW.
The fiftieth anniversary of their arrival in Auckland is to be celebrated tomorrow by the Little Sisters of the Poor. The celebrations will be inaugurated by Solemn Pontifical Mass in the chapel at St. Joseph's Home, Heme Bay, at 10.30 in the morning. The public have been invited to attend a gathering, which will be addressed by Bishop Liston, in the convent grounds at 2.30 in the afternoon. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will follow.
The Sisters- of the Poor were first introduced to Auckland by Bishop Luck in 1888. A few days after a house had been procured for them in Hepburn Street, Ponsonby, four sisters began their work. 1904 the home at Heme Bay was established and extensions were carried out in 1915.
Old people to the number of 120 can be accommodated in the present home. They are admitted irrespective of creed, and the only qualifications are that they must be poor, unable to look after themselves and have attained the age of 60. The work of the sisters forms one of the greatest contributions to the charitable activities of the Catholic Church.
