Gambling, nntor drives, wine and song these were conspvuous by their absence when the Chinese of Rangoon celebrated their New Year in Mafch. Chinatown was exceptionl'y quiet, and except for the custom of visiting the Zoological Gardens and the decorating of houses wnh large lanterns and tapestries, the Oiilooker would not have believed that the Chinese we e ushering in the New Year. Th" firing of crackers and the giving of "angpau»" (gifts contained in red packets) were also customs that were inis-.ed. Owing to the SmoJapanese confli.t tho Chine-e pre spending as little as possible so as to be able to°remit money to help thfir soldiers.
