FLATS PROJECT.
CITY COUNCIL EFFORTS.
AIDING OLD ACE PENSIONERS.
Progress of the Auckland City Council's project to build flats for* old-ape pensioners was outlined to a meeting of pensioners in St. Matthew's Hall yesterday by members of the council. The Rev. H. A. Johnson presided. The councillors present were Messrs. J. Sayegh, J. T. Jennings, J. S. Stewart. E. F. Andrews and J. Purtell. Describing the efforts of the council to have old-age pensioners' flats built, they pointed out that after plans and specifications had been prepared it was found that new legislation would be necessary to empower the council to proceed with the project.
However, a definite promise had been made by the Government that the necessary legislation would be put through and the plan would be facilitated at the earliest possible moment. The project, it was stated, had been discussed for a considerable time and the council had received a sympathetic hearing. A tribute was paid to Mr. Johnson for his keen ,\nter«st in the welfare of the old people and his work in advocating greater consideration of their needs. A vote of thanks was accorded the City Council members.
