PHYSICAL EDUCATION.
The display by the student teachers at the Training College on Saturday afternoon brought home to those who saw it the great benefits which follow physical education, especially when allied to exercises which arouse the interest, even the enthusiasm, of those who participate in them. It emphasised the value of the training which forms a part of the general equipment of the school teacher, and the community value of his services in life saving, and resuscitation. But the display also brought to mind the fact that the policy of encouraging sport and recreation enunciated by the Hon. W. E. Parry still remains nebulous, so far as the public is aware. The setting up of a Council of Sport to determine the broad lines of policy, and when, where and how sporting bodies were to be assisted, encouraged or controlled, was suggested by the Minister nearly two years ago as a preliminary step to the organisation of leisure. The choice of such a council is not an easy one, but since the proposition was first discussed there has been ample time to make a choice. If the council is to function with any success the interest aroused in the matter should not be allowed to die down; it is frequently more difficult to rekindle lost enthusiasms than to organise a system from the ground up when the "first fine rapture" is allowed to have its fling.
