MR. W. EDGERLEY,-OF EPSOM. VETERAN OF MAORI WAR. To-day Mr. William Edpcrlcv of Epsom, celebrates his 90th birthdav ' He was born ,n IS4B on the prope'rtv at Eclgerley Avenue where he now re-idc-H ls father was Mr. John Edperlev. a botanist from Kew Gardens, who 'carried out important studies of the t-ees of New Zealand, some of which b'ea<nis name. Enlisting -in IS7I during the Maori VVar, Mr. William Edgerley joined the Armed Constabulary and served in vari ous parts of the Waikato. but ehioflv in garrisoning: the redoubts in the vioinitv Of Cambridge. Kihikihi and other placeon the frontier of settlement \ftcr the war he entered business as a builder and earned on operations for a time in I'ljl. Returning to New Zealand, he carried on as a builder and eon tract or for many years, finally retiring about 26 years ago. Mr. Kdgerley served on the Xcwmarket Borough Council for 23 vcars being one of the original members of that body. He was a member of the Newmarket and Parnell Licensing Committees for about 20 years, acting a « chairman for live years. Mrs. Edgerley died seven years a™o and there is a family of three son- alid tour daughters. His brother. Mr. John kdgerley. about two years his senior resides in the same neighbourhood. \ gathering of relatives will take plac-c this evening hi celebration of this pioneer's birthdav.
