SCOUT YEAR.
NEW ZEALAND ACTIVITIES.
BOYS OF TO-DAY.
Stressing the scout creed of loyalty, civility and smiling service, the Scout Year Book for 1037 records the activities for the year mentioned of the Boy Scouts' Association of New Zealand. Removal of headquarters from Christchurch to Wellington is dealt with in the aiynial report, and changes consequently made in the method of coutrpl. The report notes that there has been a purging of the roll, and this, in conjunction with declining birth rate, has to be taken into account in considering a loss in numerical strength of 165 oflicers and 1 .'!!!(> boys throughout the Dominion There was also the altered disposition 011 the part of youth in these days to be entertained rather than to "adventure"' for himself. "We have the satisfaction of knowing that although our job as scouters may be harder in these modern times," declared the chief commissioner in his annual report, •'never before was the need for the principles of 'scouting for boys' so great as it is to-day."
The year book indicates that after removal of headquarters in May the association had started to make financial improvement after having previously experienced a period of living on its reserves. Various aspects of the organisation are dealt with, including the proposed 1940 centenary jamboree. Providing exact information concerning officers, and the various branches, the year book gives an excellent survey of scout work in New Zealand.
