U.S.A. PUZZLED.

Austria's Status Causes. Dilemma. LEGALLY INDEPENDENT. WASHINGTON, March 18. The United States faces a dilemma concerning the status of Austria. Legally, Austria is still an independent State, since she has not announced any change. It is Germany that has notified the State Department of "the reunion of Austria with the German Reich." America's acceptance would sanction force. The issue of Italy's conquest of Ethiopia would thus be revived. Austria's debt to the United States is another problem, os is also the question of trade. Germany is on the United States' "black list," while Austria is entitled to the benefits of reciprocal trade agreements.

In official circles there is growing uneasiness. This is reflected in demands for swift passage of the bill to spend £280,000,000 on the U.S. Navy.
