PRODUCTION OF BENZOL.
AUSTRALIAN ENTERPRISE. TO HELP COAL INDUSTRY. An interesting sidelight on the coal industry is provided by the Federal Government's efforts to stimulate the production of benzol in Australia. Investigations sponsored by the Government have been ptoceeding into the production of benzol by the gas companies, the Xewnes Investigation Committee's report having indicated that the larger companies in Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle might be able to produce it at a profit.
The Prime Minister. Mr. Lyons, has expressed the opinion that probably 3,500.000 gallons of benzol could be produced annually by pas works, bringing the total production 1 in Australia to about 6.000.000 gallons a year. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company. Limited, now produces about 2.230.000 gallons a year at its Newcastle works, and when the new byproducts plant at Port Kembla is in production an additional 750,000 gallons will he available. It has been estimated that the extra production of between 3.000.000 and 4.000.000 gallons of benzol would mean the consumption of between 50.000 and 100.000 addi-
