FINALS PLAYED.

TUESDAY'S TOURNEY. SOME FORMER WINNERS AGAIN IN THE FIELD. (By TRUNDLER.) The fine weather this iveek enabled several more clubs to find their champions, so there will be a good representation at the champion of champions next week. Auckland.—Maxwell Walker beat George Oake twice in the final to win the title for the fifth time. Balmoral.—J. W. Barber has won the title for the first time, defeating N. McGaffan in the final. Barber was run-ner-up to Walter Franks two years ago, and after his very attractive play in the pail's last week, where he played some really spectacular shots, he will be well watched. Carlton. —S. Jenkin beat W. A. Lancaster in the final, the win giving him the title for the first time, whereas Lancaster won when they met in the final four years ago. iTenkin was also runner-up to H. 0. Clarke eight years ago and before joining Carlton he had won the Rockv Rook title twice, in 1921 and 1927, in the latter year defeating H. C. Clarke in the final. Devonport.—R. N. Melville, runner-up to J. Gray two years ago. followed the prevailing fashion when he gave the lathis first loss on Tuesday afternoon, while T. E. Gooding, the champion of three years ago. defeated J. W. Lowe, the champion of 1933. who is now president. This win gave Melville the bye, while Gooding gave Gray his second loss, and Melville then defeated Gooding. winning the title for the first time. The winner is in excellent form this season and was seen to advantage in the recent Christmas tournament. Hallyburton Johnstone.—S. Sharp has repeated the success of the title-holder, S. X. Houghton, two years ago, in getting through without a loss, whereas last voar the championship was played in four sections, the winners to play each other. In the quarter-finals last week Sharp beat H. Dawson: F. Dyson, the champion of eight years ago. beat J. Daniels, and R. Boag beat H. Stenberg. Sharp beat Dyson in the semi-final, Boag getting the live, and then Sharp beat Boag by IS to 16. Hillsboro.—The final was plavcd on Wednesday evening when W. Davidson defeated E. Longville. This is the first t |ni e that either of them succeeded in reaching the final.

Mangere.—Matches had to bo struck to see who was shot in the last head, after a tie on the twentieth, and it was then seen that P. Aldred had beaten I. Ix>we, a new member of the club, who recently arrived frpm Tokoniaru Bay. A hired had the bye in the previous round,-while Lowe defeated Penman, but the latter had the bye just before that round, while Aldred gave Lowe hie first loss. Mount Eden.—Probably no final was anticipated with more interest this year than when it became known that G. A. Deare, formerly of Carlton, wis to meet L. N". Thomson, formerly of TJawhiti, for both are known to be equally efficient in every kind of shot. Alter several ties and several dead-heads Deare won. Thomson missing by a hair's breadth the drive that wonld have given him his eighth championship New Lyrm.—The remaining match to complete the quarter finals resulted in a win for W. P. Rankin, six times club 'champion, who defeated P. Meese. W. Witham then got the bj;e, while I. Thompson beat Rankin, and in the final Thompson beat Witham twice. This is Thompson s second championship, as he had already won four years ago, but it is hard luck for Witham to lose, after reaching the final unbeaten, for he has now been runner-up five times. ' _ Orvehunga. As soon as the Empire Games ami Australian championship winners returned from Sydney they settled I down to the more prosaic play in the club championship, but V. McGuire disposed 'of H. A. Robertson, and then beat F. Livingstone with bis last bowl. They tied several times, and the last head was iQTvite sensational, aa each recovered the shot twice, McGuire having the latest Snd mqet critical success. It is a coincidence that McGuire beat Livingstone with his last bowl when they met in the fourth round, but the latter won rather easily when they met two rounds later. On Wednesday afternoon McGuire. as winner of the afternoon section, met N. L. Norman, winner of the evening section, and although they tied several times the latter was generally two or three ahead, increasing his lead to five on the nineteenth. On the twentieth McGuire used his last bowl to push out N"orman for two, and on the remaining he was lying three for a tie when Norman slipped in between two of them with a beautiful draw, planting his bowl right alongside the shot bowl. With the drive and both hands blocked, McGuire drove into the head, with no alteration, so Norman threw away his last bowl. Norman is best known as winner of the club's firstyear championship in -1935, when he skipped the first-year rink at Easter, and won the section.

Ponsonby.—ln the semi-final Parsons had the bye, while E. .Turv had a Splendid game against G. Frieberg. The latter excelled himself in this contest. and reached 20 to Jury's 19, but the Dominion champion held two 011 the next head to win, only to bo defeated in the final by Parsons, at 21 to in, after jrottiiifr finite a good lead in the middle of the game. It is astonishing to note the great number of times that games go the opposite way at a second meeting. This is another case. Jury defeating Parsons in the final last year. Pukekohe.--F. R. Price seems to be the only champion in the centre who has retained hif title- this year. In the final he beat J. H. Keith l»y 21 to IS. the latter reaching the club final for the first time. Rocky Nook.—ln the semi-final A. O. Farley defeated the title holder. W. H. Keatley, who had also won the club chamrpionsiliip on eleven previous occasions. The bye went to 1?. V. Ellisdon. who was I.not at the top of the chart, as Farley had defeated him in the previous round, but | both of the others had already had a bye, a point that will be noted by match committees in working the automatic draw. When they met in the final they had to follow the fashion, and he defeated Farley. Roy Ellisdon has been in the clnb about five years, and his. accuracy in .play has been noted by the selectors for some time. He is a son of F. J. H. Ellisdon, now playing for Devonport. who won the Rocky Xook championship in 1915. the only Auckland instance that oec-urs to mind where father and son have won the same club title. Takapuna.—G. Waterman, who was j runner-lip to S. Hunter last year, succeeded | in the hard task of defeating H. Collins j twice, whereas two years ago the latter 1 won the title without a loss. The final waa well contested, and they tied three times, but Waterman was four up on the nineteenth, and Collins could not overtake him. West End.—The fifth round -was completed by F. Eshelby defeating H. S. Hill. In the next round A. S.' Faire beat Eshelby, the only other two-lifer, while I Bremner had tiie bye. and A. H. Court ' defeated .T. Hopwood. Bremner then gave Faire his first loss, while Eshelby i eliminated Court. The three survivors! had all had a bye. so it went to Bremner. ' while Eshelby beat Faire. reversing in , orthodox fashion the result in the sixth : round, an I Bremner beat Eshelby in the i final. I

Remuera.—For the fifth year in succession the club is sending forward a new champion, whereas for the previous six years the champion had already won the title, either at Remuera or at some other club. The new representative, M. D. White, is the newest of all, for he only took to the game in the 1934-35 season, the same season as the new Onehunga champion, although he was already well known in tennis and billiards, a very good breaking in for bowls. There is no firstyear championship at Remuera, but last year he won the junior championship, and his most recent public appearance was on Anniversary Day. as a member of J. C. Duncan's rink who won their section at the Auckland Club's tournament. White reached the Remuera final as a twolifer. and was defeated by A. B. Lawrence, but he was true to convention in reversing the order at their second meeting. Glen Eden. —M. M. Sunde has won the championship for the fourth time, three times in succession. In the final he tied with M. Marinovich and won the play-off, the latter suffering the same fate as he did seven years ago. Otahuhu. —Three of the biggest winners in the club contested the finals. J. Gardiner, champion on three previous occasions, defeated A. J. Carson, four times champion. and then defeated H. Everitt, eight times champion. A new arrival in the district, Frank Auld, won the title last year.
