MAYOR ISLAND.
USE BY TOURISTS. PETITION FROM MAORIS. ANNUAL TRIBUTE WANTED. (fly Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Maori owners of Tuhua, otherwise Mayor Island, have petitioned the House through Mr. H. T. Ratana (Western Maori) requesting the Tourist Department to take charge of the island. They state that the island is used largely by tourists for big-fraine fishing. The waters constitute fishing ground, having similar relation to the Mnoris as the waters of Lakes Taupo nnd Rotorua. Therefore, they suggest that they be paid annual tribute as is done to the Maoris of Taupo and Rotorua.
