CONTRACT BRIDGE.
NO FINESSE NECESSARY. (By THE FOUR ACES.) Squeeze plays occur very frequently. On a great many deals the squeeze is automatic; the natural play of the cards forces one opponent to miguard honour cards, which enables the declarer to win tricks lie otherwise could not win. Tt ie> not necessarilv the operation of the equeeze that marks the good player, but the realisation that the squeeze liars occurred due to a careful counting of the hand. On the deal below Harold Colvin. of New York, fulfilled a three no trump contract by, squeezing one of his opponents and dropping an honour which he would have lost to, iiad lie finessed. South West North East Pass ] 4 Pass 2 NT Pas* :! NT Pas* Paw Pas* The final contract was sound enough, but West found the beat opening—a Hear). Declarer won the third round of the suit with his Ace and took a Spade fineese, which lost to East's. King. Eaet cached his good Heart, West discarding a Diamond. East returned a Diamond and Mr. Colvin won with the Ace and unblocked for a possible later finesse by playing the Jack from dummy. A second Spade finesse was taken and dummy's Jack won the trick. The Ace of Spadee was played and, unfortunately for declarer, the Queen did not drop. Mr. Colvin now played otit his three Clube, keeping the King in dummy for the third round. West had to discard, and threw another Diamond. South now led the nine of Diamonds, and when Eaet played low, declarer, by a simple count, had a sure play. He knew East held the remaining Club, West the Queen of Spades. Therefore, the Queen of Diamonds was blank in West's hand and Mr. Colvin lost no time in going up with his King, making the ninth trick with the ten of Diamonds. — (Copyright.)
