FRIENDLY RIVALS.
AUCKLAND MILITARY BANDS. (Special to Star.") PALMERSTON N., Tuesday. In the "own choice" hymn test last evening the Auckland bands played very well, although both the Auckland Artillery and Auckland Regimental were several points behind the placed bands. The Wanganui Garrison Band played rpmarkably well to win with 141 points. This combination should be difficult to defeat in the test selections. The Auckland bands stand a reasonable chance of gaining a place in the selections or quickstep competitions, which are to he held on Saturday afternoon. The marching oI both Auckland bands was most favourably commented upon on the occasion of the street march yesterday. Judging on last evenperformance, the Auckland Artillery has a heavier bass section than their friendly rivals the Regimental Band. The Regimental combination, however, makes up for this deficiency in crispness. Both bands appear to be very evenly matched. A graceful compliment was paid the Regimental Band by members of the Artillery Band when it was announced that the Regimental Band had defeated the other Auckland combination by half a point in the street march. Immediately the result was announced the winning band was wholeheartedly cheered by the defeated combination. The Artillery Band then played the winners off the ground.
