CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.
TWO MAORIS PROSECUTED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.j WHAKATANE, this day. Two cases of alleged cruelty to animals were brought in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Robert Tukehu was charged with cruelty to a calf by throwing it down and beating it over the head with a heavy fence batten. The animal later died. Tukehu's excuse was that the calf had annoyed him by breaking out and sycking its mother. Defendant was fined £5. Another Maori, Tai Hunia, was charged with cruelty to a dog. It was stated that defendant was annoyed by a dog which had kept him awake at nigt. In exasperation he had thrown the dog into a well and left it there. Hunia was fined £2.
