IMPORTERS MEET.
LOWER TARIFFS SOUGHT.
That any attempt to alter tariffs drastically in the interests of Xew Zealand manufacturers would result in higher prices to the consuming public was the statement made at the initial meeting of the recently formed Bureau of Importers yesterday afternoon. The convener, Mr. W. A. Boucher, presided. I he views expressed indicated that the importers felt that there were manv lines 011 which more than sufficient protection was already afforded to Xew Zealand's secondary industries. It was stated that the action of Xew Zealand manufacturers in attempting to influence the Government to shut out British leather footwear would liave serious
"---ion* for the buying- public and would adversely affect <>ur trade agreements with C.reat Britain. The Bureau of Importers it was stated, intended to collect and broadcast information with the object of having trade barriers and tariffs removed. It was proposed al-o to request the Government to seek information from the importers before making any tariff alterations.
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President. Mr. W. A. Boucher; vice-preeident, Mr. S. E. Marler; executive, Messrs. E. \llan Brooker, F. G. Lintott. H. T. Merritt, E. H. Robinson and C. E. Tudeliope.
