WHIRLWIND DAMAGE.
TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION.
MOKAI MILLS UNROOFED.
(Prom Our Correspondent.) ROTORUA, Thursday.
A trail of destruction was left by a whirlwind which took a narrow track across country at Mokai, 40 miles from Rotorua, early yesterday afternoon. Two of the mills owned by the Taupo Totara Timber Company were unroofed and four workmen's huts were almost destroyed.
The whirlwind struck the mill buildings at about 1.15 p.m. with a deafening roar as the corrugated iron roofing was ripped off and other structural damage caused to the .building. The iron was thrown for upwards of 100 yards. Simultaneously the whirlwind struck the four small huts, which were quickly reduced to piles of splintered timber, broken windows and household effects.
Luckily the mills had not reeom--menced work since the holidays, and there were few employees about, but several men who were carrying out repairs to machinery had a miraculous escape. They were able to take shelter until the whirlwind had passed.
The damage is estimated at £1000. It is expected that the mills will be able to begin work on. Monday.
