CORNWELL CUP.

THE FIFTH RACE.

WON BY PLIMMERTON.

SAILED IK FRESH BREEZE (By Telegraph.— Special to "Star.**} PLIMMERTOX, Wednesday. The fifth race of the Cornwell Cup contest was sailed this afternoon in a fresh breeze and choppy sea and was won by Plimmerton, sailing the Auckland boat Swish, with Paremata second, Wellington third and Auckland fourth.

The fifth race was to have started in the morning, but heavy squalls of wind and raiu made it necessary to postpoue racing un ' - P-m. when conditions were better, although it was still blowing hard enough to cause several boats being reefed. AuckManuka 4 and Wellington capsized whde waiting tor the start in the morning, and the Tauranga boat was blown over on the beach. *lhe course in the afternoon was laid well up the bay, the boats sailing four rounds of a windward and leeward course to get the usual six miles.

Manukau was lirst away to a straggling start, followed by Plimmertoii, Paremata, Christchurch, Auckland, Suva, Wellington. Otago, Wanganui and Tauranga. Auckland, with a reefed mainsail, was first to round the lee mark. Suva and Wanganui did not set spinnakers. Plimmerton, sailing in their own water, soon took the lead and were not again headed. Tauranga retired after reporting having fouled a mark, and later Otago capsized. Plimmerton had some trouble with her spinnaker on the last run down, but her win was never in doubt, and she received an ovation when she finished. Paremata also sailed well, and maintained second place throughout. The finish was: Plimmerton, 3h 3m 48s; Paremata. 3h 6m 15s; Wellington, 3h 6m 42s • Auckland. 3h 8m 8s: Manukau, 3h 13m 40s; Wanganui. 3h 15m 13s; Suva, 3h 16m 245: Christchurch, 3h 20m 14s.

The official p lacings were held up for half an hour pending the committee's consideration of protests entered by Tauranga against Plimmerton and by Manukau against Wellington. After hearing evidence both protests were disallowed, and the race stands.

With five races sailed there are five winners. Auckland. Paremata. Wellington, Tauranga and Plimmerton. The Auckland boat Swish has carried three winning crews.

It is proposed to hold three races on Thursday if possible, as the contest shows signs of being prolonged. Last year, at Tauranga, it was decided on the sixth race.
