"This m the fourth bookmaker caught in the same hotel during the last two months, and although the others have been, fined, ,S>rby has carried on hits- illegal calling after he finished his work.'* On. behalf of Sorby. Mri -JL F. W. Dickson said accused was a respectable married man with four" children. He had never been in trouble previotasly. While unemployed Sorby hud contracted some debts and since he had been in employment he had done a bit of silver betting in the hotel after his work had finished. Bookmaking was not his occupation. Counsel suggested chat as ■ Sorby had decided never to take bets again the magistrate might deal leniently, and perhaps order him to come up tor sentence or place him on. bation"l can't do that." eaid Mr. Stint. "I will have to be consistent. I really ought to fine him twice as much as the others as he carried on after they were caught, but I won't do that. He will be fined £25.^
