WIN AND PLACE BETTING.
Your correspondent "Tired Tim" must obviously be tired mentally and physically when he states that he and others gnashed their teeth when the horse they backed for a place only. won. and they felt that they were entitled to something more on their horse being placed first: but thank goodness that the majority of Xew Zealanders are good sportsmen, for when they back a horse for a place they do not care whether it is first, second or third, so lon 7 as it is placed in the first three. Unfortunately, my ex;>erience this Christmas has been the reverse of that of "Tired Tim." as most of the horses I backed at Ellerslie ran third, but I did not gnash m.\ teetii and expect something for 7ettin<r a third place; however. I went to the "trots." and the win and place betting there enabled ire to recoup some of my losses at the "gallops." and thus continue to carry on. otherwise T was "broke" to the world after two days at the "gallops' with the small dividends and no chance whatever of recouping one's losses. I must admit that from mv experience the win and place system is out on its own. and decided] v the most popular, for when f..ur dividends go up 011 the li>a-d the enthusiasm of the crowd generally is delightful, wher "is the two dividends only for the siirjle pool are generally received in silence and disappointment. which speak volumes. The s r "^le
poo] bettinar system is a delusion ais-.l a snare which would not be tolerated anywhere outside New Zealand. * Q.E.D.
