BORN IN BLIZZARD.

SNOW-BOUND IN CAR.

HUSBAND'S DESPERATE EFFORTS

(Special.—By Air Mail.) LONDON, December 18. No mother ever gave birth to a babv in more perilous circumstances than "a young Englishwoman this week. A 22-year-old Leicester engineer was driving his wife to her parents' home at (irepiiock, where arrangements had been made for the baby, her first, to be born.

Snow fell incessantly from the moment their car left Leicester. By the time the car had breasted the 900 ft summit of Snap Fell the storm had become a blizzard. J lie car skidded on tlie frozen road, and ran into a 4ft deep ditch, filled with snow. There was no help nearer than a dozen miles away.

The husband got out, struggled to lift the car back to the road. While he was doing so, the baby—a bov—was born. To free the car tiie husband ran some way down the road until he found a baulk of timber with which to lever it up. Then he found that a wheel had been buckled.

He had to wade into a roadside stream to get some stones to prevent the car from skidding again before lie could jack up the car to change the damaged wheel. He carried the stone* back to the car in his jacket. Finally he succeeded in changing the wheel and was able to drive into Carlisle, where the mother and child were taken to a nursing home. Later both were stated to be doing well.
