RESISTED POLICE.
DISORDERLY STREET SCENE. TRIMMERS TO REMAIN ON SHIP. Two trimmers from the steamer Matakana, who caused a disorderly scene in Queen Street at 8.20 last Friday night, were dealt with in the Police Court by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., this morning. John Hartley (19) and James Moore (49) were each charged with being disorderly while drunk, resisting Constable A. Moore and with using obscene language. Hartley wag further charged with mischief by wilfully damaging a suit, to the extent of 6/6, the property of Detective W. E. Turgis. Both pleaded guilty to the first charge, but added that they did not remember what happened. This was taken as a plea of not guilty to the other charges. After evidence had been given by Senior Sergeant Calwell, who said he was assisted by Detective Turgis and another constable in helping Constable Moore to take the two men into custody after a disgraceful disturbance had occurred, the magistrate convicted both men on all charges.
Each was fined £2 for resisting, and was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on another of the charges. "Now, if either of you leave your ship while it is in port, I'll send you up to Mount Eden," Mr. Hunt warned them.
Hartley was ordered to make good the damage done, 6/6.
