SHORE LOSES.

GALLANT Y.M.C.A. COLTS' GREAT STAND. SCOTT 208; LUND 139. ARCHER AND CLEAVE EXCEL. Ec'en Park maintained its reputation of the previous week. lor another quartet of players returned three-figure scores on Saturday. And not one of the latest hatch of cricket heroes is in the Auckland I'lunket Shield eleven to meet Otago here on New Year's l)ay! The two most valuable knocks were those of the young players. V. Scott and ('. 11.I 1 . Lund, as they added over 200 for Y.M.C.A.'a sixth wicket, and enable.l their side to top the useful tally of 344 before the former was caught after a chanceless innings of 208. He had already compiled the previous highest senior score of the season—l 74 not out, against University last month. Lund, given a couple of "lives," signalised his gratitude by carrying on to 139. Not so sound as his now famous partner, Lund nevertheless put up a remarkable performance, as it was his first appearance in big cricket. He had l»een conspicuous in senior B ranks and a month ago also hit 174 not out against Windmill. When T. H. C. Caughey dropped Lund when he was 60, Y.M.C.A. breathed an audible sigh of relief, as they were two men short.

Les Archer's unbeaten century for North Shore fails by comparison only because it did not bring victory to his tide. The young left-hander went in when the tide seemed likeiy to set igainst the champions. Undismayed by the position he set to work as resolutely as in the first innings, and when joined by captain J. T. Bush the two lefthanders gave Grafton much leather-hunt-ing.

From five wickets for 76 to nine for £59 was a startling change. Not only Has Archer still there when Busn "declared," but he had realised the goal of every cricketer's ambition and asked serious questions of the Xew Zealand express and Auckland's new slow bowler. It was a noble example to set the junior representatives who are this week to set out on an ambitious southern tour, as Archer himself was a distinguished Brabin Cup player a few seasons back. R. H. Cleave played a true captain's part for Ponsonby and it was no fault of his that the side did not come immeasurably closer to Eden's mammoth total of 495. Indeed, he actually ran up 109 of the 191 rune which went down on the score sheet off the bat. Pleased, indeed, were the selectors at this sterling exhibition given by the Cleave they had admired for his courageous batting and brilliant fielding in the Plunket Shield matches of Auckland's victorious jubilee year —1933. These four dominated their games to such an extent that'no other individual tally in senior cricket on Saturday I reached half a century. C. Burke, with six for 79, was the bigIgest wicket-taker, and following his five for 41 in the first innings, the Graftonian has provisionally justified selector Hugh Duncan's confidence in him. Rather sensational were the figures of K. Cantlay (Eden), who was at Mount Albert Grammar School last year, for he dismissed four Ponsonby men for only four nine altogether. No other bowler took more than three wickets in any of the four senior fixtures.

All matches resulted in first innings victories: — Grafton beat North Shore (1935-36 and 1936-37 champions) by 104 runs. Y.M.C.A. beat King's Old Boys by 134 runs. Eden beat Ponsonby by 291 runs. Parnell beat University by 83 runs. With one more series to go before completion of the first round, which will not be resumed until January 15, the positions of the clubs are:— Out- First No right.
