The general principles controlling the expenditure of £11,000,000 on the defence of Australia in the current financial year were discussed bv the Defence Council to-dav. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A.~Lvons, presided. Security from external aggression is being sought by a simultaneous expansion of the Navy, Army and Air Forces, an intensive organisation of internal resources, and the production of munitions, raw materials and foodstuffs to meet a national eniergencv. Australia proposes to work toward the ideal of becoming the supply centre for the Western Pacific area of the Empire. It is believed there is little prospect of a reduction in ffie defence vote in the next two years.
