Oil-from.-Coal Plant in Welsh Distressed Area. WORK FOR THOUSANDS. British Official Wireless. (Received 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, December 17. The foundation stone has been laid l'or new works at Werne Tarw Colliery, in the vale of Glamorgan, where the first oil-from-coal plant in the special areas is to be set up. The Government and the Nuffield Trust provided half the required capital of £050,000 for the works, which will be of the lowtemperature carbonisation type. The plant will turn between 500 and 750 tons of coal a day into smokeless fuel, petrol, Diesel oil, "tar, acids and other by-products. Werne Tarw will be connected with ' the neighbouring Raglan Colliery, which ' is to be reopened after lying idle for 1 four years. The two collieries will give employment to several thousand men. 1 The Commissioner for Special Areas , reports considerable progress with j development in the North-Eastern Trading Estate in Team Valley, near Gateshead, Durham, where 28 factories have ' been completed, of which 20 are occupied. ' Twenty-three are in course of erection and 17 further tenancies have been definitely arranged. Four factories are occupied and 15 ] are building at Treforest Estate, near Cardiff.
