NAZI GOAL.

"AGE OF SHORTAGES." WIZARDS OF THE TEST TUBES. BERLIN". "Complete utilisation of all waste products" is the goal towards which Nazi chemists have been working since the "age of shortages" dawned over the third Keich. From creating substitute materials to replace those which Germany lacks, they have now turned their attention to the complementary products which result from their chemical industries. Nazi wizards of the test tube have created entirely new industries from these by-products which formerly were thrown away. They have studied the chemical waste from the artificial rubber industry, they have experimented with the by-products of the cellulose wool processes, and from these and other industries they claim they have found ways of synthetically producing many of the raw materials which Hitler's Germany lacks.

From a single by-product of the artificial wool process, chemists have succeeded in making four important synthetic raw materials. From a sulphite base, which is produced in huge quantities in cellulose wool fabrication, tliev have obtained alcohol, cattle feed, tanning material and artificial soap.

The sulphite base which yields these products is used to dissolve the lignose fibres of wood, which later are extracted. It contains large quantities of sugar. By fermentation, chemists now can obtain 15.000.000 gallons of alcohol per year. The alcohol is pure and will be used chiefly for combustion motors.

The dissolved sugars also yield a valuable ferment which provides fodder for cattle and horses. Nazi chemists further state that they can make glue and glazing material from the substance remaining after the sugar has been extracted.

The cellulose tanning material may enable Germany to cut down its imports of this raw material by two-thirds. Mixed with regular tanning liquids, it increases their effectiveness, and it also may be used in its form. The cellulose wool factories can produce about 400,000 tons of this tanning substance yearly, and can deliver it in liquid or powdered form.

The amount of fat necessary for making soap can be reduced by one-half by using the purified sulphite base. The soap tliur> produced is said to be as effective in every way as soap made with high-grade animal fats. With a yearly yield of 14,000,000 cubic metres lof this base, Germany can save a great deal of import costs on 200 ; 000 tons of fatty acids yearly.
