WIN AND A LOSS.
AMERICANS IN AUSTRALIA. BROMWICK BEATS MAXO AGAIN. QUIST TAKES A SET FROM BUDGE. SYDNEY, December 16. In the tennis Test match between America and Australia J. Bromwich (Australia) defeated C. G. Mako (America), 6—3, 6—3, 6—l, and J. D. Budge (America) defeated A. K. Quist (Australia), 4 —6, 7 —5, 6—l, 6—o. Mako mixed hig game and came to the net at every opportunity, but was repeatedly passed by Bromwich, whose coiner and sideline drives were brilliant. Early in the second match Quist's service and forehand drives were too strong for Budge, who was hitting the tape or just missing the baseline.
From I—4 in the second set, however, the American found his touch. Thereafter he was always in command and scored numerous placements with his sweeping backhand.
Bromwich had a previous victory over Mako, having conquered him in straight set*i in the Victorian championship last week.
