Te Awamutu Cup Form Not Good Guide to Auckland

What the Records Show During the Last 2 I Years

Depredation Won Both Events.—But Others Since Have Failed. —Starland Has Next Best Credentials.

Not since lPlfi, when Depredation won the IV Awamutu Cup and the Auckland Cup, have these races been won by the .same horse in the same year. Depredation was verv sore when he went out to

EXCELLENT FIELDS.

TO-MORROW'S CARD.

contest I tie latter event, but be won very easily and created one of the greatest surprises in connection with 11 io big race at Kllerslie. However, some horses that have been placed in the Te Awamutu Cup have won or run prominently in the Auckland Cup.

DARK SHADOW FANCIED

In 1017 the Te Awamutu Cup was won by Cynic, but lie was unplaced in the. Auckland Cup. During the next two years the Te Awamutu Cup was run in February instead of December, but in 19:20 it was again decided in the latter month. Woody Glen won from Glen Canny and Starlitnd in that year and Starland went on to annex the Auckland Cup. Boomerday won at Waipa the following year, but failed to get into the money at Kllerslie. However, he was second to Tinokaha in 1023 and was narrowly beaten by Muraahi and Te Kara, who dead-heated for first place

SMART SPRINTERS IN PLYING,

Excellent fields are carded for the Waipa summer meeting, to be held at Te Awamutu t6-inorrow, and some good racing should be provided. The fact that a large number of the horses racing will subsequently be seen out at the Auckland meeting will engender a good deal of interest into the fixture. Betting will be on the win and place system. Racing will commence with the W. G. Park Hurdles, in which L'Aliegro is topweight. He has won over hurdles this season, and has second to Patagonia at Te Rapa will warrant his getting support. English Night is a fair sort and should be benefited by his recent racing.

in the Auckland Cup. Polonett took the next Te Awamutu Cup, but failed at Ellerslie, while in 1925 Gala Day, Spoony and Desert Glow, who filled the places at Waipa, were all out of the money in the Auckland Cup. Te Kara lan second to Phaola the next year, but lie was not in a place at Ellerslie. Desert Glow, Prodice, In the Shaded Peter Jackson and Teels all won the Te Awamutu Cup later, but were not in the money at Ellerslie. However, in 1933 King's Knave, who was third at Waipa' ran second- in the Auckland Cup, and the following season King March, the winner, was second at Ellerslie. Scotland. the winner in 1935, did not start at Ellerslie, but Gay Rose, who was runner-up to him, was unplaced in the Auckland Cup. Dark Shadow, who scored last year, failed to get into a place at Ellerslie, while Mazir, who was second to him at Waipa., was fourth in the Auckland Cup. Therefore, the form at Waipa when applied to the Auckland Cup during the past 21 years does not give much of a guide.

Prince of Orange has no recent form, and a better prospect may be Lady England, who is a good jumper and lias plenty of pace. Curlew failed at the Takapuna. meeting, while Mungacre is unlikely to start, owing to an injury he receired while schooling last week. Lady Diana will be making her first appearance aver hurdles, and with her speed would only need to fence correctly to have prospects. Belbroney and Folly's Choice appeal most of the others. The liest backed may be L'ALLEGRO ENGLISH NTGHT LADY ENGLAND. The Hack Sprint. A large field of well-performed hacks is engaged in the Kihikihi Hack Handicap, and a fine contest should eventuate. Huntette has been racing well round the Gisborne meetings and should be in the picture. Surella is an unlikely starter, while Strathire will need to improve to hold his own in this company. Aero King has been galloping attractively at Ellerslie and his pros-

pccta appear bright. Miss Te Koura won over the distance at the Takapnna fixture and should be seen to advantage on tiie turning course. Te Monowai finished second at his last start and should show lip again. Pirate King displayed exceptional promise last year, and if at his best will have to be "considered. Of the others, Maxown, Clooneen and Miss Mestor may be the best. The chief selections may include MISS TE KOURA TE MONOWAI AERO KING. The Plate. The majority of those engaged in the Waipa Plate have little form to commend them, and there is plenty of room for a surprise. Trevace displayed a lot of speed at Ellerslie last month, and that race has done liim good. Tui Nui failed at the same fixture, but inay show up in this class. Highland Queen injured liereelf recently, and will not start. Quilp has been placed previously, and ran well in her only start at Ellerslie. British Nation has disappointed in his races this season, but may show up oil his home track. Te Mara nui has a second to his credit recently. Desert Wings is a likely improver, and this also applies to Fleur d'Or. The two-year-olds Eastern Heir and Fidelis have both been in the money this season, and the former may do better over this distance. Some that may be in demand are EASTERN HEIR TREVACE FIDELIS. The Chief Event. The field engaged in the chief event, the Te Awamutu Cup, includes several horses who have shown winning form this season. Friesland was successful at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and on that form he is likely to have plenty of friends. Jonathan has performed

well this spring and is nicely placed with 8.12. Master Brierly, on Te Rapa form, will have to be considered, but would be preferred on a bigger course. Mazir was second in this event last year and should run prominently tomorrow. Scotland has proved himself over the distance, but a better prospect may be Dark Shadow, as bis form at Takapuna was attractive. Ferae n has been galloping in good style at Ellerslie. and it would not surprise to see him racing prominently. Sinking Fund and Parquet should be the pick of the lightweights. A preference mav l>e shown for DARK SHADOW MAZIR FRIESLAND. The Hack Cup. The class down to contest the Hack Cup is not particularly strong, and as the result of her good form recently Lady Meath is likely to be made favourite. Kena finished second in a similar class of race at Rotorua and has been galloping well during the past

couple of weeks. He stays on well and the distance should not trouble liiin. Te Monowai has an earlier engagement, but . Prince I'angi, is started in this event in preference to* the Ohaupo Hack, will have plenty of friends. Gay Sister won at Cambridge on Labour Day and Raepata was successful at the Whangarei fixture, but the latter failed badly at the Takapuna meeting. Cometarium, who has been placed recently, is the most likely to effect a surprise, while Diacquedoon is not without prospects. The favourites njay be LADY MEATH KENA PRINCE RANG!. The Ohaupo Hack. Several of those engaged in the Ohaupo Handicap claim earlier engagements and the field is likely to be reduced. Loombination, who heads the list, has lieen working well, but may (ind it hard to concede weight to some of those lower down. Black Musk performed well in the spring and has proved himself over the distance. Lady Meath may start earlier, but Bronzette would only have to reproduce her effort when she finished second at the Takapuna meeting to hold bright prospects. Money Raid should be all the better for her racing recently, while Hopalong and Requiem have been placed this season. Of the others, Strathire, Balinavar and Barricade appeal most. The bulk of the money may go on BRONZETTE BLACK MUSK. REQUIEM. The Open Sprint. Whirling, top-weight in the Flying Handicap, is a class sprinter, but may need a race. Trilliarch and Black Thread have won this season and are both equal to running a sound six furlongs. Tray Bit was successful at Ellersiie last month and has l>een galloping well in the interim. Orate and Galilee are both smart sprinters, and the former makes strong appeal, as the turning track will suit him. Farland is an improver, and his second at his last start will ensure him getting plenty of support. Stretto will only need to begin smartly to prove difficult to beat, as she is an improved mare. Marie's Acre, Mangukaha and Little Artist cannot be discarded. Most support may be acorded ORATE STRETTO TRILLIARCH. The Concluding Cvent. The programme will be brought to a conclusion with the Paterangi Handicap, in which there are some well-performed gallopers. Kellv will have a 71!> allowance and is a possibility. Miss Lu and Tray Bit will have friends, and Rona Bay should go well over this distance. Valamito has been galloping attractively at Takanini and he should be in the picture. Sergia is well seasoned, as also is Airam and Crooning. Suleiman failed over a mile at Te Rapa, but he is likely to be hard to Wat over this distance. Star Artist is coming l>ack to form, while of the remainder Little Artist and Sir Abb may be the best. Good money may be invested upon SILKIMAN STAR ARTTST VALAMITO. A special train will leave Auckland for Te Awamutu to-morrow at 6.55 a.m. and Newmarket at 7.2 a.m. T'i:» acceptances are: — 11.45—w. o. pa hk Hcnm.rcs or £iio. One mile and a half.
