N.Z. CONFERENCE.
WORKERS' EDUCATION. OPENED BY MAYOR. The Workers' Educational Association was a valuable cultural force in the social life of the community, said the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, when opening this morning the annual Dominion conference of the association. "I learned ohlp yesterday that members of the first W.E.A. class held in Auckland included the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, and the Minister of Lands, the Hon. F. Langstone," said Sir Ernest. "That in itself is surely a tribute to the value to the community of the association. Speaking with a superficial knowledge of'the aims and object*? of the association, I should say that the progress it has already achieved will be considerably multiplied in the future.
"The tutorial classes which it holds in economics, international relationships. the drama, science and English literature must continue to be of material aid and inspiration to the working classes for whom the courses primarily are intended."
On hehalf of Auckland Sir Ernest extended a welcome to the visiting delegates. He expressed the hope that coming years would see the fulfilment of the mission of the association.
Mr. N. M. Richmond. director of the Auckland W.E.A., replied on behalf of the delegates.
