COMMENT MADE.
HOSPITAL FUND APPEAL
"RATES SHOULD BE ENOUGH."
Not without comment were Christmas donations made yesterday by the Auckland Harbour Board to the Auckland and Waikato Hospital funds.
When an appeal was receive! by the board for assistance in the provision of comforts at the Auckland Hospital, the chairman, the Hon. T. Bloodworth, M.L.C., moved that £5 should be donated locally and £2 to the Waikato fund. Without directly opposing the motion, Mr. Harvey Turner remarked that "the taxation put through for the hospital boards should be enough to keep them going." Mr. H. Luke said he was surprised to! find such a body as the Hospital Board writing for donations. Mr. J. Sayegh: I'm not a bit surprised that the Hospital Board has made this appeal. 1 think the amount named is small when one considers the number of sick children in hospital. The proposal to make donations was adopted. Next moment the chairman moved that a Christmas appeal by the Open Door Mission should be declined. Mr. Sayegh: How can we decline this appeal in the face of the other ? To my way of thinking this is even more deserving than the first. He moved as an amendment that £2 2/ should be donated. The chairman explained that the mission was not on the board's list, and the hospital donations were of a broader nature. There was no seconder to Mr. Sayegh's amendment, . which lapsed accordingly.
