DAY OF OBSERVANCE FIXED.
FIRST MONDAY IX JUNE

For the future, tlie date nf observance of the birthday of His Majesty Kin™ fJeorge will he the first Monday in June! This is the purpose of the Sovereign's Birthday Observance Bill introduced in the House of Representatives, to-day by Governor* Message. It was explained by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, that business people had made representations regarding* the complications involved in observing a statutory holiday on December 14, so close to Christmas, and suggested that June 9 be adhered to. The matter was referred by the Government to His Majesty, whose consent was obtained to dating back the holiday to June. Mr. W. Forbes (National. Hurunni) : Have the other Dominions altered it? The Minister: Yes, and His Majestv has agreed. The bill provides that in any Act. award or industrial agreement in force 011 June 9. I!W7. where reference is made to the Sovereign's birthday, this shall be deemed to relate to December 14, but where awards, etc.. come into force after June 9. ]!K!7. or before December 14. and reference is made to the Sovereign's birthday, it shall have no application in '•espect, to (he current year. Thereafter, the holiday will be generally observed oil the lirst Monday in June.*
