WOOL VALUES.

LOWER TREND.

SEASON'S OPENING.

FIRST AUCKLAND SALE

CONTINENTAL BIDDING.

THREE-QUARTERS UNSOLD. '"Sorry, gentlemen, and thanks for your offers, but we will be glad to see you again in January." This epitomises the attitude of Auckland wool brokers towards the buyers who came to the Town Hall to-day in connection with the first sale of the Dominion's new season.

Of the first catalogue fully 75 per cent was passed unsold, the buyers' offers being well below growers' ideas of value.

What a contrast with the scene at the correspondim; sale a year ago! On that occasion buyers from all woolconsuming countries in the world were on their toes, eager to get in their bids and making practically a complete clearance of the entire catalogue at prices that showed a good 50 to »50 per cent rise. This morning there was a tense atmosphere a/s buyers, brokers and spectators assembled in the vicinity of the Town Hall Concert Chamber. The buying

bench, numbering over 70, was the biggest yet present at a local fixture, and the crowd of onlookers, chiefly farmers and. their wives, filled the gallery to overflowing before the sale commenced. There appeared to be an instinctive reluctance to make n start.

Quito early it became ap|>arent that the sale was proceeding better than many had feared. The Continent came in brightly from the Jump, and although there wa« hesitation in regard to occasional lots, most elicited keen bidding, albeit at prices that were below the vendors' reserves. Of the first catalogue about 25 per cent was sold. The balance becomes the subject of subsequent negotiation by private treaty. Order of Sale. The order of selling and the number of bales of wool allotted to each of tile auctioneering firms was as follows:— Bales. 1. N.Z. Loan and Mercantile 5603 2. Dalgety and Company 7403 3. Abraham. William* and Wright, Stephenson Company 4211 4. Alfred Buckland and Sons 1868 5. Farmers' Auctioneering and North Auckland Farmers' Co-op. . .. 5815 Total 25,000 Past Seasons Compared. The following table indicates the results of the first sale of the season in the last decade:— Average Average per bale. per lb. Value. £sd d £ 1028 22 11 0 15,64 406.000 1921) 15 9 2 10.05 238.125 1930 «13 2 4.6T 100,750 1931 7 510 5.06 103.131 J932 512 3 8.68 132,118 1933 13 18 2 0.7 327,604 J934 716 2, 5.628 88,250 J935 12 2 0 8.27 240,154 1936 20 10 6 14.255 439,270

Auckland's clip came forward in excellent condition, being very much- finer than last year, many of the lines being over SCh quality and this accounted for the special interest shown by Continental buyers. Prices were a -full 50 per cent down on the first catalogues, as compared with last November, but even at that were better than had been expected. But for Continental bidding it would have been a dull sale. As is usual with Auckland's first sale, there was a large percentage of hogget wool and this was very fine and practically all carding wool, deep hoggets being practically nonexistent in the offering. The sale proceeded as it promised in the flrat catalogue and when the gathering adjourned" for lunch at one o'clock the market trend had shown no alteration from that ruling at the

commencement. Bidding was still keen at the lower levels and brokers were passing about 75 per cent of the offerings.

At this tune the prices offered were am follow: For super halfbrcd and Corriedale, up to ]6d per lb; hoggets, 50's to 52's lOd to IQJd, 48's to 50's Did to 10W, 48's to 4«'s 9d to lOd; lambs, 8d to 12J<I; erutcliinge, 6*d to 9d; bellies and pieces, (i,d to 81d; locks and pieces, 4d to sid.

As each catalogue was disposed of negotiations were immediately opened up by brokers as l»etwcen the farmers who happened to be in attendance and such buyers whose highest bids had been noted and who were temporarily free.

In some eases satisfactory deals were recorded and there is bound to be a fair amount of private dealing from now until the buyers leave the city tomorrow night.

However, it may be assumed that the bulk of the wool unsold to-dav will be retained and again offered at Auckland's second sale on January 25. Most of the local farmer* art- in a much better position to hold their wool than they were in the slump period. Turn of the Wheel. Outside the Town H ; ,ll the "Star" representative got in touch with some ot the small groujw of farmers who hovered about the building durin« the progress of the sale. Their reaction to the changed conditions of the market g. a a zie l ?' tomiSed by ° nC P h »""oP"ic '•Well, what's the good of worrying The wheels keep on turning.
