MR. G. If. McLEAN. SOUTHERN STIPENDIARY STEWARD. (By Telegraph—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHXJRCH, this day. Mr. George Norman McLean, who died suddenly at his residence, Tinwru, early yesterday morning, was widely known throughout the South Island, where he had officiated for several year#!, as atipendiary steward for the New Zealand Racing Conference. Mr. McLean lived for most of his life in North Canterbury, and for many years lie was a farmer at Glasnevin, near Amberley. At that period he wae greatly interested in racing and hunting, and when the Amberley Steeplechase Club held a race meeting each year, before it was changed to the Amberley Racing Club, he used at timea to ride his own liorsee. He also raced other

jumping horses, the hurdler Kingeway being one that won for him when trained by F. Holmes at Riecarton.

While at Glaanevin Mr. McLean bred a number of horses. Bloomer was one of the mares he owned, her foals including the speedy Martian colt Pyjama, raced euccessfully by the late J. McCoombe. At a later period he owned Shuffle, and he bred the brilliant sprinter Paper Slipper, he being a foal at foot when the mare was sold to Sir Charles Clifford. He aW owned the imported stallion. Paper Money for a few years, disposing of him when hg became a racing official.

Mr. McLean became «. member of the Canterbury Jockey Club in 1900. was electe<l to the committee in 1923. and a steward in 1920, retaining these position* until he resigned in 1933, when he took up iiis duties a« stipendiary steward. When the Amberley Raeinp Club wa.s formed Mr. McLean wa« one of its ertiiy officials, eventually becoming president, a position he held until he was appointed * stipendiary steward.
