UNEMPLOYMENT LOAN

I Two hundred and twelve unemployed j married men will start a number of I work* under the Auckland City Council on Monday as part of the plan of works provided for under the Employment Promotion Loan, 1937. The men will be engaged through the Auckland Placement Office. Expenditure on the works to be undertaken will total about £37,245, of which the Government will provide about £21,000 by a subsidy equivalent to £4 a week a man over 17 weeks. Included in the schemes are the development of a new part of Waikumete cemetery; earthwork and paths for the proposed drive in the Domain from Stanley Street, and the clearing of undergrowth in the Domain; levelling at the municipal motor camp; the formation of the new road off Garnet Road for the proposed new City Council housing scheme; improvements on the site of the old Parnell school; retaining wall and paths at Orakei Baain; developn,f i v the G, * ds tone Road reserve, with the provision of bowling green and tennis courts; formation of a small reserve on the tidal flat at the corner of Brighton and Shore Roads; and various jworka on roads and at the Avondale quarry.
A number of suburban local bodies are providing additional employment for the purpose of engaging a large number of registered unemployed over the Christma* period. Requisitions were made to tho Auckland Placement Office yesterday by the Mount Albert Borou-'li foTV M °T Board for ~0 men each, and the Mount Lden Borough Council asked for 30 \]l are to start work on Monday.
