TO HURRY START.

England-Australia Service

Next Year.

MR. LYONS OPTIMISTIC

(Received 2 p.m.) CANBERRA, this day. The air mail service with flying boats between Britain and Australia may be able to start early in the New Year in spite of the delay in the construction of bases as was reported yesterday. Mr. J. A. Lyons said the Commonwealth would do everything possible to hurry the start of the service, and if the cost was not too high temporary facilities would probably be provided.

"MODERN BRUNNHILDE."

MISS BATTEN HONOURED

(Received 12 noon.) LONDON", November 24. The Lady Mayoress. Lady Twyford, frave a reception for Miss Jean Batten this afternoon. Mrs. W. J. Jordan was present. "Our modern Brunnhilde," was the epithet which the Marquess of Londonderry, a former Secretary of State for Air, applied to Miss Jean" Batten, at the annual banquet of the City Livery Club, at which she was a guest.

• Lord Londonderry said Miss Batten's splendid achievements were indelibly and eternally written on all records of aviation.

"Brunnhilde" is the name of a mythical heroine of the Germanic legend of the Nibelungs. The name means, "Warrior Woman in Armour." In the Norse version of the myth she appears as a Valkyrie, who'carries the souls of dead warriors to Valhalla, and she is one of the characters of Wagner's cycle of operas dealing with the legend.
