Improvement in Depressed
Areas.
RETARDED BY ARMAMENTS. Britten Official WirH«w. (Received 1.30 p.m.) RUGBY, November 24. Considerable improvement in the economic position of the special areas in England and Wales, which suffered most acutely in the crisis of 1031, are recorded in the report of the commissioner, Sir George Gillett. It shows that unemployment in the areas has fallen by 25.0 per cent, of which only a small part is due to transference out of the areas. The greater part of the recovery has been independent of the Government armament programme. In some cases the defence programme has retarded development as the demand for constructional materials has been so great that the erection of new factories has been delayed.
The commissioner expresses his determination to press forward with the development of new industries.
