BRITAIN'S POPULATION.

The quarterly return of the Britleh Registrar-General shows that during the second quarter of thie year more than 6000 more babies -.ere born than in the corresponding period of 1036, the total of births being 163,867, compared with 157,652 in the second quarter of laet year. The mortality of infante under one year of age was 54 per 1000 births, or 4 per 1000 below the average of the ten preceding eecond quarters. The number of deaths was 118,524, or 45,176 fewer than in the preceding quarter, and 1016 fewer than in the correeponding quarter of laet year; the proportion of boys, compared with girls, was higher than in any of "the preceding ten 6econd quarters.
