A BAD START.
BOWSER STATION THEFTS.
PROBATION FOR YOUNG MAN. Two charge* of stealing £1 5/ on November 9, and £4 3/2 on November 11, were brought against Laurence Raymond William Connell, a farm labourer, aged 18, in the Police Court this morning.
Connell pleaded guilty.
It was stated by Detective-Sergeant Walsh that Connell came from Albany, and that on November 5 ho started to work. for Cadman's Parking Station, Limited, in a bowser station. At the end of the first day the cash register showed a shortage of 10/. and on November lla shortage of fl 15/. Later the sum of £4 3/2 wae found to be missing from the office. Connell was questioned but denied knowing anything about the lose. However, when eeen by Detective-Sergeant Barling he admitted the thefts. Connell had the key of the office, and returned and stole £4 3/2. When arrested he only had 3/6 on him. Nothing previously was known about Connell.
After hearing the probation officer, who recommended that accused be given another chance, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.. placed Connell on probation for two years and ordered him to make restitution of the total amount stolen, £.5 R/2. in such manner as the probation officer misrht direct.
