COAL IN NEW ZEALAND.
ELIMINATION OP WASTE
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. "A disproportionate •bare of the increase in the coal requirement* of the Dominion, brought about by increased prosperity, hae been enjoyed by the importer, aa compared with the local producer," say* the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, in hit annual state ment to Parliament.
The Minister expresses the view that increased costa of producing coal in New Zealand, brought about as a result of increased wages and better conditions introduced by the present Government, have been partly responsible. He adds a hope that gas companies, which are the principal consumers of imported coal, will do their utmost to help local industry. A bright feature, he remarks,'is the elimination of coal wastage in the Waikato, where for a number of years 100,000 tons of slack was annually dumped. "I wieh to record my appreciation of the co-operation of the coal mining companies hi dealing with the problem," says the Minister.
