FOREST PROJECT.
MINISTER'S DECISION. (From Our Correspondent.) TAURANGA, Saturday. The Commissioner of State Forests, the Hon. F. Langstone, has written to Mr. C. H. Burnett, M.P., in reference to representations made from time to time in support of a request that portion of the Minden Block and adjacent Crown and native land he constituted a State forest reserve and that planting be proceeded with.
"I have discussed the matter with the Director of Forestry," says the Minister, "and I find that so far as the Minden Block is concerned the areas available are not contiguous, and even with Waimanu No. ID block do not provide an area which could be classed as a commercial afforestation project. To secure such an area would involve the purchase of native land, and in view of the fact that it has been decided to afforest at least 23,000 acres at Pongakawa, which is in close proximity to the port of Tauranga, and as there is throughout the North Island a sufficient area of Crown land for the purposes of the Department during the next five years, it has been decided that it is not necessary to make financial provision for the purchase of land. In the circumstances no action will be taken in the direction of acquiring the lands mentioned."
