FOR OCEAN FLYING.
AH BAIE AND BEACONS.
A beginning will be made this week with the construction of an air base at Russell for Pan-American Airways. Including a permanent radio station and moorings for emergency purposes, the building will be located on a site to be chosen by Mr. Harold Gatty, the company's special representative in New Zealand and Australia, and Mr. F. McKenzie, Pacific division airport engineer, who will leave Auckland for Russell tomorrow, accompanied by two workmen.
It is expected that when the building is completed and the aerials are in position the necessary equipment will have arrived from oversea*.
The company will also have a permanent radio station in Auckland, subordinate to the main station at Russell. No decision has been made yet as to the site, and meanwhile the temporary station at St. Helier's will meet requirements.
