DOUR INNINGS BY KERR.

WALLACE IS SCIENTIFIC. MELBOURNE, November 12. The cricket match between the New Zealand touring team and Victoria was commenced to-day, New Zealand winning the toss and compiling 122 for the loss of four wickets.

Rain stopped play for the day at 3.30

The match was commenced in brilliant sunshine on a good wicket. Kerr (41) played a very cautious innings, while Vivian (30) scored with crisp shots-

Page, the New Zealand captain, was unable to play owing to a recurrence of an injury received in the match against South Australia at Adelaide. Lowry led the visiting side.

Considerable interest was taken in the match ax it gave an opportunity to try for the first time in first-class company Victoria's candidates for places in the Australian Test team to tour England next year.

New Zealand won the toes. The opening batsmen, Vivian and Kerr, soon settled down and were little troubled by the bowling of McCormick and Ebeling. Vivian played crisp cricket, placing his ehots where there were no fieldsmen. His 30 was hit up in 4H minutes and he was unlucky in falling for the rising-ball trap set by McCormick.

Moloney fell leg-before just prior to the luncheon adjournment to Fleet-wood-Smith, who was bowling a long eerie* of rising balls.

Kerr batted with extreme caution. New Zealand's century went up in two hours 35 minutes.

Ten minutes later a fast one from Ebeling scattered Kerr's wicket.

With three down for 112 Weir joined Wallace, who was playing a scientific frame. He had made 20, giving no chances. Weir did not last one over, Ebelinj; claiming his second wicket. Four wickets were then down for 122. Donnelly went to the wicket, but almost immediately rain stopped play. Lowry, Hadlee, Roberts, Parsloe and Lanrason have still to bat.
