SUSTENANCE FRAUD. MAN GAOLED AND FINED. WARNING NOT HEEDED. Describing the offence us a "deliberate case of fraud," Mr. R. On Walker. S.M.. in the I'olice Court to-dav, sent a inariied man. William Moody, to prison for one month and also lined him U2.1. Accused pleaded guilty to four charges of false pretences in order to benefit under the Kmployment Promotion Act. Prosecuting for the Department of Labour, Mr. W. A. Black said that Moodv. from March to August. obtained casual work on the wharves, but continuously declared that his earnings were nil. Altogether Moody made 17 false declaration*. 14 of which resulted in him lieing paid £23 1.1/ in excess of what hi- was entitled to. Nine of tinfalse declarations had been made following the warning given by Mr. Orr Walker in May. He was a married man with one child and was on sustenance. Moody had nothing to say. '"This is a deliberate case of fraud after the warnings given throughout New Zealand." said the magistrate. "I notice that some of these cases are being dealt with more severely than I have done. If there are any more of these deliberate cases 1 will consider sending them to the Supreme Court, where the offenders will probably be punished more severely." Moody was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on the first two charges, ami on each of the remaining two he was fined £12 10/. The line, said the] magistrate, would cover the amount the accused had wrongly obtained. Seven Others Fined.
