AUCKLAND FIRM.
BOOT MANUFACTURING. MANY MEN AFFECTED. Notices intimating that "owing to circumstances beyond their control" (•tailing has to l>e reduced have been received by a majority of employees of a big Auckland boot manufacturing firm. Over a score of men finished to-day. and it is anticipated that a similar number of men will !*• dismissed next week. The linn has been working short time for some weeks. The manager of the firm, when interviewed. declined to discuss the position, though he admitted the fact. The circular received by tlie men who have been put oil", however, referred to the competition of overseas firms as lieing one of the factors concerned.
Negotiations arc at present being nmducted in Wellington regarding the position of the boot trade, with tin? suggestioii that tli. 1 manufacturers here should lie given further tariff protection. It is anticipated that some decision will he given within a few days-.
