GREAT MATRON.

TEPPO'S PROGENY. ! SUCCESS ' «T STUO. wuvhsm or om «n<ooo. In IfllO Mr. J. E. Brewer purchased in England for Mr. E. E. D. Clarke, of the Melton Stud, Victoria, the stallion The Welkin, and a filly. Teppo. by from Dtim Dum. by Carbine. Both were destined to plajr an important part in the history of the Australian thoroughbred. The Welkin sired winners of more than £300.000, and Teppo left her mark bv producing to' The Welkin remarkably brilliant' sprinters—Thrice, Three; Isa, Cyden, Volpi, Trois. -and others. That font alone would have entitled Teppo to honourable mention as one of the most successful matrons imported I to Australia, but the recent victories of the two-year-old colt Nuffield has directed more attention to Teppo, as an influential factor, through her daughters, in the breeding of some of the greatest horses of the last decade. , Her progeny won £2Q,HBA and. altogether. her descendants earned £114,125 in stakes. Solely Sprinters. Teppo's progeny were solely sprinters, but the mating of her daughters Deneb and Trey with the Carbine line sire Cyklon, produced in 1024 a filly, Hero- ' winkie, and a colt, Trivalve, respeci tively. Herowinkie was not a great galloper, but Trivalve proved one of the greatest stayers, winning in 1027 the 1 A.J.C. and Victorian Derbies, and the ' Melbourne Cup Herowinkie was a great matron. To I Heroic she produced in 1030 the great . Hall Mark, who emulated his near relation, Trivalve. by winning the two Derbies and Melbourne Cup in the same year. In 1025 Isa, another daughter | of Teppo, was mated with Cyklon and produced it filly, subsequently purchased ! by Mr. C. B. Kellow for 575 guineas, > and named Belle Gallante. This filly , won the Uimcrack Stakes and other I races. Mr. Kellow, having achieved remark- ' able success with Hall Mark by the I breeding of a Cyklon filly to Heroic. t sent Belle Gallante to Heroic and' per- - severed with the mating until this year 5 it was justified by Nuffield, who, judg- ; ing by the manner in whidi he won the • GwyA Nursery at Caul field and the i Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington, > seems likely to become a good stayer.

Much of the staying ability in Teppo's' descendants comes from the influence of the sire lines of Carbine and Heroic. It is through the infusions of such bloodlines that the staying ability of the maternal line has become apparent. Teppo's maternal line is a stout one. She is a descendant of • the Burton Barb mare, designated by the late Bruce Lowe an his No. 2 family, and, in a comment on his maternal lines theory, Lowe said of the No. 2 family: "In Leger winners it nearlv doubled the No. 1 family, which would point to its being better in staying blood. . . Equally SatMMfal. That was his opinion about 1900, and in later years the family has been equally successful when stamina has been required. Its descendants include Gainsborough, one of the recognised sire* of-stamina in England to-day; Teddy, a stud success in France and America; Reigh Count, one of the best horses on the American turf; Call Boy (Derby); Foxlaw and.Precipitation, who won Ascot Gold Cups; and the remarkable stayer, Brown Jack. In Australia the line has been prominent through Gold Rod, Phar Lap. Sir Regent, Mala, Carbine, Hall Mark, Trivalve, Kennaouhair. Young Idea, The Dimmer, John Wilkes and many others. Teppo's branch of the No. 2 family ha* acquired more fame through the deeds of Ajax. Teppo is a . granddaughter of Charm, the grandatn of Meadow Grafts, the grandam of Ajax.
