PAYMENT OF REFUNDS
HIGHWAYS EXPENDITURE. COUNTY'S DIFFICULTIES. —— i (From Onr Correspondent.) PAI.MERSTON N., Thursday. Tlie county's overdraft, according to a statement by Mr. A. Campbell, chairman, at a meeting of the Oroua County Council, is steadily creeping up, mainly- as a result of claims for refund* forwarded to the Public Works Department not having been recovered. It was reported that the bank overdraft stood at £4700, while the sum of approximately £3500 was due by way of refunds from the Public Works Department for work done on main highways. The first claim had been made in .Tune without acknowledgment from the Department. "It certainly makes our position .1 little difficult," added Mr. Campbell. "If the claims had been met w'e would not have been in the present position. It seems rather strange that there should be sucli delays." He understood other local bodies were experier- ,-ing similar delays in having their claims met. The county clerk suggested that a better be sent to the Main Highways Board asking for payment of the first claim rendered, amounting to £2000. It was decided to write pointing out the inconvenience caused. "There is nothing to be alarmed at," added Mr. Campbell, "but at tlie same time we are paying more interest than we otherwise would."
