Comets vary in length a great deal. While the length of the tail -of the comet of 1744 was 19 million miles, that of the comet of 1843 had a tail 200,000,000 miles long. The material of the tail is ejected from the nucleus of the comet, but the nature of the material, which includes hydrogen and other gases, is not exactly known. That the tails of comets are very tenuous is obvious from the fact that stars shine through them almost undimmed.
