' A social was held in the Mount Eden * f ternoon for the delegate* who are Vieiting Auckland to attend the annual conference of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union. The president, Sister Jean Porteoua, presided, and welcomed Mrs. T. H. Roseveare, wife of the retiring Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, and Mrs. W. H. Howes, wife of the Moderator-elect. The officebearer* of the union were then intro- ■ duced to thoee present, after which special greetings were extended to representatives from the Presbyterian Association, the Church Missionary Society, the Methodist Women's Missionary Auxiliary, ther Church of Christ, the Salvation Army, the Baptist Women's Missionary Auxiliary, and the Interdenominational Committee for Women's Welfare.
In her speech of welcome Sister Porteons referred to the excellent progress made by the union during the past year. Substantial increases bad been made in all deportments, and many of the smaller branches had been carrying on good work under trying difficulties. She urged all tbe members to go on in * spirit of persistence, self-denial and faith, and so enable tbe work to continue in its present satisfactory manner. During tho afternoon songs were given by Miaa Essie Macdonald and Miss Gwenda Weir. * Mrs. de Berg played tbe accompaniments. Afternoon tea was served by members pf tbe executive.
