MAORI CHIEFTAINESS.
WAXKEKE IftLAND BURIAL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHEKE, this day. In the presence of more than 100 people, the funeral of the Maori chieftainess, Mrs. Mihi Te Urikaraka Te Waero, of Surfdale, Waiheke Island, took place yesterday afternoon at the Maori cemetery at Huruhi Bay, Mr. R. Hadfleld conducted a service at the residence of the chieftainess, and also at the graveside. Both services were in Maori. Mrs. Te Waero was a daughter of Rawiri Puhata, a prominent chief of the Ngati-huroa tribe, and her husband was Unukaraka Te Waero, who died two years ago. He wae born at Miranda, about 25 miles from Pokeno, and was recognised as the leader of the Waiheke Maoris. Maoris came for the funeral from Miranda, Onehunga, Orakei and Northcote.
