PAPAKURA SCHOOL.
DIAMOND JUBILEE WEEK. BONFIRE CELEBRATION. The diamond jubilee of the Papakura Public School is being celebrated by a three daye>' carnival, and yesterday a united schools' sports was held on Prince Edward Park. Children came from Hunua. Drury, Karaka, Ardmore and Takanini, competing in a series of events. There was a large attendance of the public. The headmasters of district schools, Messrs. S. Bishop (Papakura), ,T. S. Doull (Drury), A. Crickett (Hunua), M. Heron (Ardmore) and G. Buchan (Karaka) supervised the sports, and during the afternoon the pupils of the Papakura School gave a dancing display. The evening was given over to a fireworks carnival on the park, ending with a gigantic bonfire which could be seen for miles around. Sports events in the afternoon and evening resulted: — Boys' Championship.—Lloyd White (Papakura), 1; David Burnside (Ardmore), 2; Don Finch (Papakura), 3. Girls' Championship.—Vivian Johns (Papakura), 1; Jill McNeish (Papakura), 2; Betty Tunnecliffe and Joyce Mclnnes. equal, 3. Jones' Cup Memorial Handicap.—First heat: W. Smith (llvds), 1; D. Evans (syds), 2; M. Middleton (Bvds). 3. Second heat: ,T. Forrest (Byds). n. Aukett (2vds), 2; R. Clarke' (12yds), 3. Final: D. Evans, 1; W. Smith* 2; R. Clarke, 3. Time, 12 3-ss. This afternoon the old pupils gathered in the old school for a roll call and were addressed by Messrs. H. E. McEntee, chairman of the Town Board, V. Hardwiek, '•hairman of the school comJ. E. Elliott, ex-schoolmaster.
