DOMINION-WIDE interest centres round Christchurch from to-day, when there began a week's racing carnival, controlled by the Canterbury Jockey Club and the New Zealand Metropolitan Club. With the tension slightly relieved, a section of the huge crowd regularly seen at Riccarton on New Zeal and Cup Day can be seen I Studying raocbooks and taking up j positions before the start of the I race.

Rebel Lad, another favoured cup horse, is galloping straight for the camera. Last season he raced his way to open company and this season had three seconds to his credit in four starts.

1 41 The New Zealand Cup, one of the principal tests for stayers, was the big attraction to-day. The best handicap horses take part in this IS| race which is becoming richer in tradition as the years go by. Formerly W called the Canterbuy Jockey Club Handicap, the name was changed to the New Zealand Cup in 1883, Mr D. O'Brien's Tasman being the fir.-,t winner. Mares have a good record in the cup in recent years, winners of the sex being Fast Passage, Palantua, Steeton, which paid a big price, and Cuddle. Koyal Chief, a strong favourite for the New Zealand Derby to be run at Riccarton on Monday. This Riccarton colt, which is trained by F. D. Jones, who also has Cerne Abbas in his stable, won the Trentham Stakes well from his northern rival, Smoke Screen, and later won the weight-for-age, Harcourt Stakes.
